A 27-year-old mother says a ketamine addiction left her needing a new bladder.
Amber Currah said the drug ruined her health and daily life. She began using ketamine at age 17 after trying it on a night out. She said she did not like it at first. Over time, she became addicted and used it every day.

Also, Currah said her use grew severe in her early 20s. She spent about £30 a day and used up to 25 grams weekly. She said she woke up at night to take it.
“I would wake up in the mornings and sniff a line of ket.”
Meanwhile, serious health problems followed. Currah said she developed bladder pain and constant urges to urinate. She has been fully incontinent for five years.
“I wet the bed every single night.”

Later, doctors found major damage to her bladder. Tests showed it had shrunk to one fifth of normal size. Doctors said it was covered in scar tissue and prone to infection.
“They put a camera up my bladder and said it’s an absolute mess.”
Now, Currah is on a waiting list for a neobladder. The surgery uses part of the bowel to create a new bladder. She stopped using ketamine in summer 2023 but still urinates every 15 minutes.
“If I hadn’t stopped taking it, it would’ve eventually killed me.”
