Kelly Clarkson is mourning the loss of her ex-husband, Brandon Blackstock, who died at 48 after a three-year battle with cancer. The former couple, married from 2013 to 2020, shared two children, River Rose and Remington Alexander.
Their split led to years of custody and legal battles. In 2020, a judge granted Clarkson primary custody, citing a need for “stability and continuity” for the children. Court papers noted “issues of trust” and difficulties in co-parenting. Blackstock, who lived in Montana, had agreed to daily FaceTime calls with the kids.

Clarkson admitted in 2021, “It’s tough… we agree on the main things, but it’s hard when you’re not together all the time.” Their legal disputes over money ended in 2024, avoiding a public trial.
Even after the divorce, Clarkson said her children hoped their parents would reunite. “They constantly bring it up,” she shared in 2024. Blackstock’s passing closes a chapter of public conflict, private pain, and a lasting bond through their children.
