Mary Austin, 74, the woman Queen frontman Freddie Mercury called “the love of my life,” has dismissed claims he secretly fathered a child. The allegations come from a new book, Love, Freddie, which relies on supposed diaries from Mercury and the alleged daughter, known as “B.”

The book claims Mercury had an affair with a friend’s wife, resulting in a daughter who remained a “closely guarded secret.” It also suggests Austin knew about the child and kept it hidden. But Mary says she’s in “total disbelief.” “Not one person contacted me for a right of reply,” she said.

Austin insists she never knew of any child or private diaries. “If Freddie had a child without me knowing, it would be astonishing,” she added. She spent most days with him before his 1991 death from AIDS-related pneumonia.

For fans, the dispute raises questions about how much of the rock legend’s life remains untold — and how much is pure myth.
