Health experts are warning holidaymakers about a mosquito-borne virus spreading across Asia, Africa, and the Indian Ocean. Recent outbreaks in India, Sri Lanka, and Mauritius are linked to travellers returning to England. Thankfully, “there is currently no risk of onward transmission in the UK,” officials confirmed.

Chikungunya is spread only through mosquito bites, not person to person. “Simple steps like insect repellent, covering skin, and bed nets reduce risk,” said Hilary Kirkbride of UKHSA. Symptoms include sudden fever, rashes, and severe joint pain—sometimes lasting weeks or even years. One patient said, “The pain bends you up. It’s unforgettable.”

Cases continue to climb worldwide, with Brazil recording over 185,000 infections this year alone. France and Italy have seen small local outbreaks, raising concerns about Europe’s future risk. Travel doctors now advise checking destination alerts and considering vaccination if heading to high-risk regions.
