SDP MP Eemeli Peltonen, 30, was confirmed to have died in the parliament building today at around 11am

Peltonen had spoken openly in June about serious kidney problems and a bacterial infection. In a heartfelt post, he shared: “To control the bacteria, I was started on an intravenous antibiotic course. At the same time, treatment for my kidney problems will continue.”

His death shocked colleagues and supporters across Finland. Prime Minister Petteri Orpo called it “really sad news” and said politics would pause out of respect. Parliament Speaker Jussi Halla-aho added: “Peltonen was a well-liked and respected colleague across party lines.”

Peltonen entered politics at just 18 and quickly rose to become the youngest city council chairman in his hometown. Friends and fellow politicians described him as dedicated, talented, and full of promise.

His passing is a painful reminder of the struggles many face silently. How can we better support those carrying hidden battles?
