Freddie Prinze Jr. has no plans to return as Fred Jones in another Scooby-Doo movie. He starred in the 2002 film and its 2004 sequel but now regrets the experience. He explained that the original scripts underwent many changes and the studio wasn’t upfront with him. “It wasn’t the best. I’ve been on two jobs where I had regret doing it and Scooby was one of them,” he said.

While Freddie is uninterested in returning, his co-star Matthew Lillard, who played Shaggy, expressed interest in an R-rated third film. Matthew believes an R-rated movie could be fun and pointed to the success of the Snyder Cut of Batman as an example of fan influence.

Although there are no plans for an R-rated Scooby-Doo yet, the franchise has recently explored more mature themes. The 2022 animated movie “Trick or Treat Scooby-Doo!” confirmed Velma Dinkley’s sexuality, and HBO Max’s “Velma” featured a kiss between Velma and Daphne, as well as adult themes like drug references.
