Imagine disappearing as a teenager and being found decades later just steps from home. That is Omar Bin Omran’s story.
Omar vanished at 17 during Algeria’s brutal civil war. His family believed he had been killed. In reality, he was hidden only 200 meters away, trapped in a neighbor’s cellar disguised as a sheep pen.
“They found him under hay in a stable,” said his cousin Khaled Rgueb. “He was alive, but deeply afraid.” Today, Omar is 45 and receiving medical and psychological care. His condition is stable, but his spirit is shaken.

The shocking discovery came too late for his mother, who died never knowing her son was still alive. “His poor mom passed without knowing he was right beside her,” a neighbor told local TV.
Authorities arrested the suspect, a 61-year-old man, and opened a full investigation. Officials called the crime “heinous” and promised justice.
This story of survival after 27 years leaves us with one question: how well do we really know our neighbors?
