Beloved Boston Marathon Dog Dead After ‘Severe Medical Challenges’: ‘We Are Devastated’

Spencer, a beloved golden retriever famous for cheering on Boston Marathon runners, passed away at 13 due to cancer. Owner Rich Powers shared the news on Instagram, expressing devastation. Spencer gained fame in 2018 for waving “Boston Strong” flags during the race, a tradition he kept for nine years.

Despite health challenges, including battling cancer and a 3.5-pound tumor, Spencer returned to the marathon in 2021 and 2022. The Boston Athletic Association honored him as the official marathon dog in 2022. Spencer’s resilience amazed many. The association expressed sadness, praising Spencer’s unwavering support for runners.

Spencer spent his last day enjoying treats and visitors before peacefully passing away at home. Powers reflected on Spencer’s final moments, grateful for the closure it brought.

Spencer’s legacy lives on as a symbol of perseverance and support for marathon runners.
