The human body still holds secrets—even in the 21st century. Scientists recently found a completely new organ by accident. This surprise could change how doctors treat cancer patients.
The discovery happened in 2020, when Dutch researchers were studying prostate cancer. While scanning patients, they noticed unusual glowing spots in the head. To their shock, they uncovered hidden salivary glands located behind the nose. “Imagine our surprise when we found these,” said Dr. Wouter Vogel.
The glands, now named tubarial salivary glands, keep the throat moist and lubricated. Their location explains why some cancer patients suffer from dry mouth and swallowing problems during radiation treatment. “A single misdirected zap could damage them permanently,” Dr. Vogel warned.
