It feels like everyone in Australia is sick right now — and experts say there’s a reason. A late flu season, combined with Covid and RSV, has left thousands battling coughs, fevers, and fatigue.
Epidemiologist Dr Catherine Bennett explained: “The influenza season peaked later, so it’s taking a while to clear those infections.” Other viruses and increased travel also added to the surge. While infections remain high, cases are now slowly easing as the weather warms.

Doctors are reminding Australians that prevention still matters. Annual flu shots, Covid boosters, and simple steps like staying home when sick can protect families. “It’s tragic to see children in intensive care with preventable infections,” said Dr Philip Britton.
Though levels are dropping, Queensland and NSW are still reporting thousands of new cases weekly. Experts warn that vaccine fatigue is leaving many unprotected. Staying alert, practicing good hygiene, and keeping vaccines up to date remain the best ways to fight back.
Will Aussies take these warnings seriously — or let complacency fuel another wave?
