‘Proud’ actress defends filming real-life sex scenes for controversial film

Back in 2004, American actress Margo Stilley starred in 9 Songs, one of the most explicit films ever released in the UK. The movie shocked audiences with real sex scenes, including oral sex and ejaculation. Even now, critics remain divided. Many described it as “annoying” and “exceedingly boring.”

Despite the backlash, Stilley stands by her work. “It was just hot sex! 9 Songs was a real film about love and sex, and I am proud of it,” she once said. She admitted facing abuse at press events, but added, “It wasn’t porn. It was about relationships.”

While critics gave the film only 23% on Rotten Tomatoes, Stilley insists it never harmed her career. She later appeared in thrillers, comedies, and TV dramas, proving she wasn’t typecast. The actress even laughed that removing her name from the Cannes credits caused “marketing genius” levels of curiosity.

9 Songs remains controversial, but Stilley’s bold defense keeps it alive in cinema debates. Should films push boundaries—or play it safe?
