Health officials are urging the public to wear masks and isolate as two new Covid variants — Stratus and Nimbus — drive a sudden rise in infections across the UK. The UK Health Security Agency reports cases and hospital admissions are climbing sharply, with experts calling the early surge “worrying.”
Virologist Professor Lawrence Young explained, “The increase is likely due to schools reopening, colder weather, and waning immunity.” Though the new variants don’t appear more dangerous, they spread easily and cause symptoms like sore throat, cough, and hoarse voice.

Experts stress that vaccination remains the best protection, especially for the elderly and vulnerable. “Getting a flu or Covid jab can save lives,” said Dr. Ranbir Bahra. The NHS has opened early booking for winter vaccines at GP practices, pharmacies, and community clinics.
If you test positive or feel unwell, avoid crowds, wear a mask, and stay home when possible. “A few simple steps can protect everyone,” Dr. Bahra added — a reminder that caution now can prevent a difficult winter ahead.
