You may not know his name — but you’ve definitely seen his unforgettable face.
At 7 feet tall, Carel Struycken is one of Hollywood’s most distinctive stars. From The Addams Family’s quiet but loyal butler Lurch to the mysterious Giant in Twin Peaks, his towering presence has haunted and delighted generations of movie lovers.

Now 77, Struycken was recently spotted outside his Los Angeles home, casually taking out the trash in flip-flops and a fleece jacket — a far cry from the eerie characters that made him famous. But behind the calm moment lies heartbreak. Earlier this year, Struycken and his wife Tracey lost their home in the devastating LA wildfires. A family GoFundMe has since raised over $100,000 to help them rebuild their lives.
Born in The Hague and raised in the Caribbean, Struycken once dreamed of becoming a film director. But fate intervened when a casting agent spotted him on a Los Angeles street in 1978 — and Hollywood never looked back.
He’s played aliens, giants, butlers, and dreamlike figures. Yet, off-screen, Struycken remains humble, quiet, and kind — a true gentle giant.
Because sometimes the biggest hearts really do come in the tallest frames.
