TV Star Chef Dies in Helicopter Crash

A wave of grief swept across South Africa after popular television chef and presenter Mynie Steffens, 43, died in a tragic helicopter accident. The beloved co-host of VIA’s hit cooking show Speel met Vuur was flying alone on November 10, 2025, when her aircraft struck power lines during a crop-spraying flight and crashed.

Crash Under Investigation

Authorities confirmed the accident occurred around 8 a.m. near Roodegrond Farm outside Patensie in the Eastern Cape. Steffens, a licensed pilot instructor, was operating a Robinson R22 helicopter when the aircraft went down. Investigators said the helicopter suffered “substantial damage” and expect to release a preliminary report within 30 days.

Local farmer Ruan Scheepers described the scene as frightening and offered condolences to Steffens’ family. Private security teams and emergency responders secured the area, with officials asking the public to respect the sensitive nature of the incident.

A Culinary Star Remembered

Steffens’ death has left the culinary and entertainment communities heartbroken. Known for her energy, creativity, and warm personality, she made a lasting mark on South African food television. Her co-host and lifelong friend, Aldi van der Walt, called the loss “a massive shock,” remembering Steffens as a woman full of ideas, kindness, and humor.

The pair’s friendship dated back to their school days, eventually leading them to create Speel met Vuur, a series celebrated for its bold style and adventurous spirit.

Tributes Pour In

Friends, colleagues, and fans have shared messages of grief. VIA TV honored her courage and passion, writing, “You showed us how to embrace life with curiosity and bravery. We will never forget your spirit.”

Our condolences go to the Steffens family during this difficult time.
