Women who visited every country in the world say two countries have the ‘friendliest’ people

Some journeys change the way you see the world, and for two seasoned travelers, kindness has been the strongest memory of all. After spending years on the road, Rachel Davey from Australia and Martina Sebova from Slovakia discovered that some countries shine brightest because of their people.

The pair met in Europe in 2008, after each had already explored more than 100 countries. As their friendship deepened, they launched a travel blog called Very Hungry Nomads and set themselves a bold goal: visit every nation recognized by the UN. In 2018, they left Melbourne to complete the remaining 88 countries.

Along the way, they found warmth in places many travelers overlook. Martina says Sudan and Iran offered some of the “friendliest” welcomes they’ve ever received, despite the tough reputations these countries sometimes carry. She added that Eritrea also left a lasting impression with its gentle hospitality and quiet charm.

Their trip wasn’t without challenges, especially as a same-sex couple visiting regions where LGBTQIA+ people face danger. To protect themselves, they simply avoided discussing their relationship, choosing safety over openness. They also faced visa hurdles in conservative nations that were hesitant to approve two female travelers.

Still, their love for exploration never faded. They continued onward, visiting places like North Korea, Afghanistan, Bhutan, and Saudi Arabia, often enduring long, difficult travel days—including a grueling 38-hour bus ride across Africa. Through it all, they leaned on each other, joking that Rachel even gets lost inside hotel hallways.

Their story reminds us that even in a big, complex world, kindness from strangers can be the brightest part of any journey.
