Sam Elliott and Katharine Ross first met on the set of “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.” Although Elliott was smitten, he was too intimidated to approach Ross. They reconnected in 1978 on “The Legacy,” and their relationship blossomed. They married in the late 1980s, Ross’s fifth marriage and Elliott’s first. Elliott emphasized the importance of effort in their marriage: “You work past the [expletive]; you don’t walk away from it. That’s how relationships last.”
Elliott attributes their enduring marriage to mutual love and dedication: “We have a common sensibility, but we also work at being together.” He believes that hard work and a genuine desire to stay married are key.
Elliott and Ross maintain a low-profile life to protect their marriage. Elliott explained, “We don’t believe all the [expletive] in the rags. And we work hard.” They live in Malibu, enjoying a simple life with their animals.
The couple has one daughter, Cleo Rose, who pursued a career in music. Elliott cherishes their time together: “I love spending time with her no matter what we’re doing.” He enjoys their walks and searching for rocks near their home.
Elliott describes their life in Malibu as fulfilling: “Life’s good. We have horses and dogs and cats and chickens. We shovel [expletive], man. That keeps you humble.”
