World’s most endangered language has only one person left alive who can speak it

Some stories remind us how fragile history can be. One of those stories comes from southern Africa, where a single woman now carries a language older than many civilizations. Her voice holds a tradition that once echoed across the Kalahari.

The language is called N|uu, and it dates back more than 20,000 years. It uses soft clicking sounds and was spoken by the San people, one of the region’s earliest hunter-gatherer groups. Today, only Ouma Katrina Esau can speak it fluently.

For generations, N|uu survived only through speech. But during the 19th century, colonial forces punished its use, driving the language into silence. Many families hid their identity, and the language slowly faded from public life.

The turning point came in the 1990s when researchers encouraged elders to share their forgotten heritage. Twenty-five people stepped forward, proud to admit they could still speak N|uu. But by 2021, only Ouma Katrina remained as the last fluent speaker.

Instead of giving up, she chose to fight for its future. She worked with linguists to record words, teach children, and build a digital dictionary. Her granddaughter is learning the language too, helping bridge the gap between elders and younger generations.

Today, Ouma Katrina visits local schools and shows children how to make the gentle clicking sounds that shaped her culture. Her work proves that even one voice can protect a piece of human history. And it reminds us that every language carries a story worth saving.
