Some stories from air travel make you smile because they feel so human. One flight attendant has now lifted the curtain on a question many people quietly wonder about. Just how often do passengers try to join the famous mile-high club?
According to longtime flight attendant Mandy Smith, the answer is “not as often as people think.” She explained that the idea sounds glamorous, but the reality is far less appealing. Most airplane bathrooms are tiny, uncomfortable, and hardly the place for romance.

Mandy said the situation comes up on roughly one in twenty or thirty flights. When it does happen, cabin crew usually knock on the door and remind passengers to stop. She noted that daytime flights feel especially awkward, especially when families are on board.
Night flights, however, sometimes get a little leniency. Mandy admitted she might ignore it if the couple is quiet and respectful. Still, even rare moments can turn chaotic when someone is determined.
She recalled one especially uncomfortable incident involving an 18-year-old passenger who tried to pull strangers into the bathroom. Crew members stopped her more than once, but she kept trying until her parents were informed. After that, the attempts finally stopped.
These stories may make us laugh, but they also remind us how strange and unpredictable travel can be. And sometimes, the most memorable moments happen far above the clouds—just not for the reasons people imagine.
