Choosing a baby name is one of the sweetest parts of becoming a parent. Most families hope for a name that feels meaningful, timeless, or simply special. But one couple never expected their choice to spark a battle with their local registrar — or ignite a debate across the internet.
Dan and Mandy Sheldon arrived excited to officially register their newborn son’s name. Instead, they were met with shock and disapproval the moment they shared it. According to the couple, the registrar looked “disgusted” and warned them their son might struggle in school or even be judged when applying for jobs.

The couple stood firm, explaining that they weren’t religious and had chosen the Greek meaning of the name, which translates to “light-bringer” and “morning.” Even so, the registrar stepped out to confirm whether the name was allowed, noting it was banned in several countries. When she returned, she reluctantly completed the registration.
Once the story reached social media, opinions split instantly. Some people praised the name as bold and beautiful, while others insisted the parents were being irresponsible. Many argued that children live with the consequences of their names long before they understand their origins.
Derbyshire County Council later issued an apology, saying registrars are trained to warn parents about names with strong associations or meanings. Still, Dan and Mandy said they were surprised by how intense the reaction became.
Their son’s name — Lucifer — continues to stir conversation. But for his parents, the meaning they chose is the one that matters most. And as many people noted, every child deserves a name given with love.
