Some losses arrive so quietly that they leave a family frozen in disbelief. That’s how it felt for the Breitkreutz family in Townsville when eight-year-old Zali went to bed with a mild headache and never woke up. One ordinary evening became the moment their world changed forever.
Earlier that day, Zali had been her usual bright self, getting ready for the new school year. She was excited to start Year 4 and dreamed of becoming a teacher one day. There were no alarming symptoms, just a small headache no one imagined could mean danger.

While she slept, Zali suffered an intracerebral hemorrhage, a sudden brain bleed that strikes without warning. Her parents, Sean and Courtney, were left searching for answers no parent ever wants to face. As Sean shared, it was impossible to put the heartbreak into words.
In the days that followed, family and friends surrounded them with love and memories. Sean called his daughter a “ray of sunshine,” remembering how she filled their home with songs, cartwheels, and laughter. Without her, he said, the days feel darker and much too quiet.

Zali loved the North Queensland Cowboys, and her family proudly shared photos of her cheering in her jersey. They’ve asked those attending her funeral to wear bright colors, a small way to honor the vibrant little girl who brought so much joy.
As the community gathers to celebrate her short but shining life, many are holding their own loved ones a little closer, reminded of how precious each simple moment can be.
