Former teen pop star has died ‘peacefully’ aged just 40

Justin Baren, best known as a founding member of the Chicago pop-rock band The Redwalls, has died at the age of 40. His father confirmed that Justin passed away peacefully on November 28, leaving fans and former bandmates deeply saddened.

Raised in Deerfield, Illinois, Baren developed a lifelong passion for music inspired by the British Invasion sounds of the 1960s. Together with his older brother Logan, he formed his first band while still in high school. What began as a teenage dream quickly grew into a serious music career. By 2003, their group—now called The Redwalls—was performing widely across Chicago and had released their debut album, Universal Blues.

The band’s momentum accelerated when they signed with Capitol Records before the brothers even graduated. Their 2005 album De Nova brought national attention, including performances on late-night television and tour dates opening for Oasis across the US and Europe. Fans and fellow musicians often praised Justin’s unmistakable bass groove and natural stage presence.

Although The Redwalls eventually paused their work as members pursued separate paths, Justin never gave up songwriting. Earlier this year, he had begun re-recording older tracks and collaborating again with Logan and longtime bandmate Ben Greeno. A new album was underway and will now be completed in his honour.

Tributes have poured in from friends, musicians, and fans who remember Justin as a gentle, creative spirit whose musical energy left a lasting impression.

His legacy lives on through the music that inspired so many.
