‘I don’t want to die estranged from Meghan. I want to meet my grandkids and Harry’: Thomas Markle speaks to the Mail’s CAROLINE GRAHAM from his hospital bed in this world exclusive interview

Thomas Markle says he does not want his life to end without peace with his daughter. From his hospital bed in the Philippines, the 81-year-old father of Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex, shared a simple wish: he hopes to see his family again, including the grandchildren he has never met.

His message came after an alarming health crisis. Earlier in the week, his left foot darkened and swelled so severely that doctors had no choice but to amputate his leg below the knee. The sudden turn left him frightened but grateful to be alive. Moreover, he expressed deep thanks to the medical team who acted quickly and to the many people who have offered prayers.

Throughout the ordeal, Markle has remained candid about his emotions. He admitted he feels anxious about the long recovery ahead. He also spoke openly about the isolation that has marked his relationship with Meghan since her 2018 wedding. However, he stressed that he has never stopped loving her and would welcome any chance to reconnect.

Reports have suggested Meghan reached out during his illness, though he says he has received no message. Even so, he hopes that one day the distance between them will ease.

For now, he faces weeks of rehabilitation. Yet he continues to show flashes of humor, even as he adjusts to profound change. Above all, he says, he is thankful for another chance at life—and hopeful that it may bring his family closer again.
