Neil Patrick Harris Explains Why He Doesn’t Want To Know Which Twin Is Biologically His

Neil Patrick Harris has long been admired for his versatility on screen, from How I Met Your Mother to Gone Girl. Yet many fans also follow his life as a parent, a role he shares with his husband, actor and chef David Burtka. The couple, together for more than two decades, welcomed twins Gideon and Harper through a surrogate in 2010.

Over the years, Harris and Burtka have spoken openly about their journey to parenthood. They often describe their children as kind, spirited, and—like most teenagers—full of surprises. However, one question continues to surface: which twin is biologically his?

Harris has addressed this curiosity before, and his answer remains unchanged. He simply does not want to know. Moreover, he believes the information would not change how he feels as a father. In interviews, he has explained that both he and Burtka provided genetic material during the surrogacy process, hoping that each might have a biological connection. Remarkably, both embryos developed, leading to the twins’ birth.

For Harris, the biology behind that moment is far less important than the family they built. He emphasizes that love, support, and daily presence define parenthood—not genetics. Burtka shares this view, noting that they discussed having children as early as their first date and always imagined raising a family together.

Fans continue to speculate about which child resembles which parent, often with great affection. Yet Harris remains clear. In his mind, they are his children in every way that matters, and knowing anything more would add nothing to the deep bond they already share.
