Lesbian couple trolled for looking like ‘mother and son’ reveal they’re raising money for baby essentials after undergoing £9,000 IVF treatment in Cyprus

A Surrey couple are preparing for an extraordinary arrival—and weathering unkind comments along the way.
Lauren Evens, 31, and her wife, Hannah, 29, are expecting triplet girls after undergoing reciprocal IVF abroad. Online, strangers have mocked their appearance, with some even mistaking them for “mother and son.” The couple says the remarks sting but will not deter them.

Starting a family in the U.K. proved costly. Clinics quoted about £21,000 for treatment. So, the pair married quickly in August 2024 to ensure parental rights, then travelled to Northern Cyprus in September. There, for £9,000 including travel, doctors transferred embryos created with Hannah’s eggs and donor sperm chosen to resemble Lauren. Three days later, a test turned positive; a six-week scan revealed three heartbeats.

Life soon shifted again. In January 2025, Hannah was made redundant. With a high-risk pregnancy and a planned caesarean at 34 weeks—likely in June—the couple moved in with Hannah’s parents to save money. Lauren, who works in medical tourism and has two older children, says they hope to raise £3,000 for essentials such as cots, clothes, bottles, and travel costs.

They also keep facing awkward moments in public. Clerks sometimes address Hannah as a child. “She looks young, but she’s my wife,” Lauren says. “We’re excited and focused on our daughters.”

Twins run in the family, but triplets were a surprise. Even so, the couple is preparing carefully—budgeting, gathering supplies, and leaning on relatives. “This is our dream,” Lauren adds. “We just want to bring our girls home safely.”
