Tarsh Cooper says doctors missed the warning signs that could have saved her husband, Ash. Ash was “fit and healthy.” He died aged 39 on Christmas Eve 2024, just 12 months after doctors diagnosed stage four bowel cancer.
Ash noticed weight loss and blood in his stools. He blamed stress and weightlifting. Tarsh says he went to a GP more than once, including a check in December 2023. The doctor said Ash was “too young” and did not order broader tests.
Ash later developed severe stomach pain. He went to hospital and thought he had gallstones. Doctors sent him home with a referral and an ultrasound booked for late January 2024. The family pushed for an earlier scan. After the scan, Ash’s GP called him back fast. Tarsh said: “I’ll never forget that look on his face when he walked in the door. He just walked in and cried.”
That afternoon, the GP confirmed stage four bowel cancer. Tarsh said: “Our whole world just blew up.” Ash started chemo on January 12, 2024. His oncologist said “it’s not treatable,” and aimed to extend his life.
Ash spent long stretches in hospital due to liver problems. On December 22, Tarsh recalls Ash saying: “It’s time for me to go.” He died in hospital at 10.20pm on Christmas Eve, with Tarsh and their three children beside him.
