Mali and Burkina Faso have announced a travel ban on US citizens. They acted after the US added them to a wider travel ban list.
US expands travel ban list
First, President Donald Trump added more countries to the US travel ban list this month. The total number of affected places rose to 39. The rules create visa limits for some countries, meaning stricter entry permission checks.

Restrictions start January 1, 2026
Next, the new US restrictions take effect on January 1, 2026. Some countries face full bans, while others face partial bans. A partial ban means some visas allowed, others blocked.
Mali and Burkina Faso respond
However, Mali said it will apply the same rules to Americans immediately. It cited reciprocity, meaning “we apply the same rules back.” Burkina Faso’s foreign minister said his country followed the same reciprocity principle.

Finally, Niger has also moved to block Americans by stopping visas and entry. Chad previously suspended visas for Americans in June after it faced earlier US restrictions.
