A potential tragedy in Battle Creek, Michigan, transformed into an inspiring story of heroism on the evening of November 5, 2025. When a vehicle slammed into a cement barrier on Capital Avenue Northeast and erupted in flames, local residents wasted no time springing into action.
A Race Against Time
Megan Waschak, an off-duty dispatcher, heard the crash from her nearby home. Rushing outside, she discovered the car ablaze with the driver still trapped and confused inside. Realizing the immediate danger, Waschak and an unidentified young man on the scene made a split-second decision.

Adopting a “life over limb” mentality, they pulled the stunned driver from the inferno just moments before the fire fully engulfed the vehicle. Another neighbor, Donovan Greer, quickly stepped in to help drag the man further away from the dangerous wreckage to ensure his safety.
Community Recognition
This courageous act might have gone unnoticed if not for witness Robert Hegerberg. Determined to highlight their bravery, he documented the rescue and tirelessly petitioned city officials to acknowledge the heroes. Thanks to his persistence, the City of Battle Creek publicly honored the group on November 26.

Mayor Mark Behnke praised the neighbors for their selflessness, calling them the “very best” of the city. Officials are now working to present the rescuers with citizen awards to formally recognize their quick thinking and bravery.
