Dwyane Wade’s 15-year-old transgender daughter, Zaya Wade, has legally changed her name and gender. The retired NBA star, who shares Zaya with ex-wife Soihvaughn Funches, received court approval for the change in Los Angeles County last year.
Zaya, now known as Zaya Malachi Airamis Wade, came out as transgender when she was 12 years old. Wade discussed the pivotal moment on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, recalling Zaya’s request to be referred to using female pronouns. He emphasized their commitment to supporting Zaya’s journey, despite challenges from her mother, who initially objected to the legal petition.
Funches raised concerns about Zaya’s age and autonomy in deciding her identity, arguing she should wait until adulthood. Wade countered these claims on social media, defending Zaya’s right to live authentically and accusing Funches of making harmful allegations.
In response, Wade filed additional court documents, asserting that the name and gender change are in Zaya’s best interest, emphasizing his role in supporting her decisions. He underscored the importance of parental support in facilitating Zaya’s journey of self-discovery.
