Bill Gates recently finished a huge divorce settlement with Melinda Gates. New tax filings show a payment of nearly $8 billion. He gave $7.88 billion to Melinda’s charity, Pivotal Philanthropies Foundation. The New York Times reviewed these financial documents.
Billions for Charity
The total payout to Melinda reached $76 billion. Much of this money supports women and struggling families. The settlement required $12.5 billion for these specific causes. Now, a spokesperson says Bill has fulfilled this agreement.
Leaving the Foundation
Melinda left the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation in 2024. The organization is now just called the Gates Foundation. Melinda released a statement about her difficult choice. “This is not a decision I came to lightly.” She also praised the work they did to fight global inequality.
A Painful Split
The couple ended their 30-year marriage because it was not healthy. Melinda said they could no longer trust the relationship. However, Bill expressed regret and disappointment over the split. “When we got divorced it was tough and then she made the decision to leave the foundation.” Bill is still worth around $100 billion today.
