Dementia expert warns nearly half of cases could be prevented by three lifestyle changes

A leading expert claims people can prevent nearly half of all dementia cases. Professor Catherine Mummery shared these details on the show This Morning.

Massive Prevention Rate

Professor Mummery says 45 percent of dementia is actually preventable. This is possible if people change three specific parts of their lives. One in three people today will likely face a dementia diagnosis. However, only a third of current patients have an official diagnosis.

Heart and Brain Link

Vascular dementia often starts with problems in the blood vessels. Mummery notes that what helps the heart also helps the brain. High blood pressure and high cholesterol increase your overall risk. Also, smoking and diabetes are very bad for brain health. “What’s good for your heart, is good for your brain.”

Physical and Mental Activity

Exercise is the first major change the professor recommends. People should get out of breath at least three times a week. The second change involves keeping the mind very active. “Mental exercise – doesn’t have to be a brain game.” Anything new that stretches the mind will help reduce the risk.

Diet and Healthy Choices

The third lifestyle change focuses on a very healthy diet. Mummery suggests eating lots of fresh food and many vegetables. Then, people must avoid processed items and too much sugar. Finally, the Alzheimer’s Society suggests cutting down on alcohol and smoking. These steps help protect against many different forms of the disease.
