EastEnders star dies aged 92: Derek Martin who thrilled soap fans as devoted father Charlie Slater passes away

The acting world is mourning Derek Martin after the beloved Charlie Slater actor passed away in hospital at age 92.

A Soap Icon

Derek Martin played the iconic taxi driver Charlie Slater for 15 years. He first arrived in Walford in 2000 as the Slater family patriarch. His character was a devoted father to four daughters and a protector. The actor left the show in 2016 when Charlie suffered a heart attack. EastEnders bosses said they are deeply saddened by the loss of the star.

An Unlikely Career

Martin was born in Bow and once worked as an East End butcher. He launched his acting career in 1962 without any formal drama training. Initially, he worked as a stuntman and appeared in several Doctor Who episodes. Later, he became a familiar face in shows like Z-Cars and The Sweeney. His big break came in 1977 playing Detective Inspector Fred Pyle.

Tributes From Family

His two sons, David and Jonathan, described him as a great friend. “Derek wasn’t just a dad to us he was a friend and supported us.” They said he was always generous with his time and loved learning. Meanwhile, fellow actors praised his massive charity work and warm sense of humor. Finally, his agent confirmed he passed away on January 10, 2026.

Passion for Life

Away from the screen, Martin loved golf, football, and professional gambling. He was a proud member of the Grand Order of Water Rats. Also, he served as “King Rat” for the charity from 2010 to 2011. He often spoke openly about his son’s battle with severe depression.
