Matteo Mariotti, a 20-year-old student from Italy, survived a harrowing shark attack while snorkeling off the coast of Queensland, Australia. During the attack, he managed to record a video, believing these would be his final moments. He later shared the footage to say goodbye to his loved ones.

The attack was severe, resulting in the loss of the lower part of his right leg. Matteo believes he only survived because his snorkeling fin became stuck in the shark’s mouth, allowing him to escape. His friend helped pull him from the water as he struggled through blood-filled waves.
Emergency officials noted that injuries of this magnitude are often fatal. They reminded the public that when swimming in the ocean, humans are entering a natural environment that belongs to marine life. Respecting that environment and remaining cautious is essential for safety.
Matteo is currently recovering in a Brisbane hospital, where his condition is stable. While his life was saved, he faces a long journey ahead. He will require significant medical care and expensive prosthetic solutions to regain his mobility and return to his daily life.
Friends and family have launched a fundraising campaign to cover his medical costs. The community has already shown immense support, raising thousands of euros to help the young student. Matteo remains grateful to be alive after surviving what he described as a “monster.”
