Update on man who was left in coma and given 4% chance of survival after pulling out ingrown hair

In 2022, a 36-year-old Texas man named Steven Spinale faced a life-threatening crisis after a routine act: plucking an ingrown hair. This small action led to a rare bacterial infection that quickly turned into sepsis.

Sepsis is a severe medical emergency where the body damages its own organs while fighting an infection. In Steven’s case, the condition was devastating. He suffered from organ failure, double pneumonia, and a stroke. Doctors placed him in a medically-induced coma and gave him only a four percent chance of survival, believing he might be brain dead.

Despite the grim outlook, Steven’s family refused to give up hope. After months of intensive care, Steven miraculously regained consciousness. His journey since then has been defined by resilience and hard work.

By late 2025, Steven reached several major milestones. Through consistent physiotherapy, he learned to sit up, eat on his own, and eventually walk again. Recent updates show him enjoying life outside the hospital, spending time fishing and being with his family.

His sister, Michelle, shared their story on social media to inspire others. She reminded followers that while medical opinions are vital, they aren’t always the final word. Steven’s recovery stands as a powerful testament to the strength of the human spirit and the importance of family support.
