Renowned chef James Kent, known for his Michelin-star restaurants Saga and Crown Shy, passed away unexpectedly at 45. Kent, who also owned the award-winning cocktail bar Overstory, was preparing to launch a new restaurant with Bravo’s Top Chef star Danny Garcia. Saga Hospitality Group announced his death on Instagram, stating, “We are heartbroken to share that James Kent passed away unexpectedly earlier today.” His restaurants closed on Father’s Day in his honor.
Tributes have poured in, with one reading, “A legendary chef. And an even more legendary New Yorker.” Another noted, “Heartbroken. I’m speechless and in complete shock. You were truly so talented and incredible. Rest in peace, chef.” A third tribute mentioned, “James was all of the best things… If he ever hugged you, you knew he meant it.” A fourth tribute said, “He was one of those people who make NY great.”
Kent, who made a name with his New York City restaurants, was planning to open five more in 2025. Known for his welcoming hospitality, he once said, “For me, making it a welcoming place lets you come in and let your guard down, chill, and be taken care of at the highest level possible.” He also earned a reputation as a talented graffiti artist. Kent passed away from a heart attack on Saturday in Brooklyn. He leaves behind a wife and two children. Rest in peace.
