Martine and Louise Fokkens, identical twins from Amsterdam, became famous as the world’s oldest sex workers. Over a career spanning 50 years, the sisters estimated they served over 355,000 clients. They were icons of Amsterdam’s famous Red Light District before retiring at the age of 70.
The twins entered the industry in their early twenties and eventually opened their own brothel. Known for their signature thigh-high leather boots, they built a reputation for professionalism. While the work was demanding, they found comfort in working together, which made the environment feel safer.

Their long career was filled with unique stories. These ranged from men who simply wanted to talk to a client who once left behind a prosthetic leg to avoid paying. Martine often remarked that the job felt like being a social worker, as many clients sought emotional connection rather than physical intimacy.
The sisters retired primarily due to the physical toll of the job, including Louise’s struggle with arthritis. Their lives were captured in the 2011 documentary Meet the Fokkens. They hoped the film would help challenge the shame and stigma surrounding their profession.

Even after retiring, the sisters kept their bond and sharp wit. Martine famously continued to see one long-term regular client for weekly sessions, comparing the routine to attending a Sunday church service. They remain proud of their history and their role in Amsterdam’s cultural fabric.
