Grey’s Anatomy Star Eric Dane’s Cause Of Death Confirmed

Eric Dane has died at 53. His family confirmed that the cause was complications from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), a progressive disease that affects the nerves controlling muscle movement.

Dane was widely known for his role as Dr. Mark Sloan on Grey’s Anatomy. What began as a short appearance became one of the show’s most memorable characters. His performance made him a familiar face to millions of viewers and secured his place in television history.

He also starred in The Last Ship and played Cal Jacobs in Euphoria, showing depth and range across different genres. Over three decades, he built a steady and respected career in both television and film.

Dane revealed his ALS diagnosis in April 2025. The illness gradually weakened his muscles and affected daily life. Instead of stepping away from the public eye, he chose to speak openly about the condition and support research efforts. In one of his final public acts, he joined the board of the Target ALS Foundation.

In his last Instagram message, he acknowledged the toll of the disease but wrote that he would not let it take his spirit. He is survived by his wife, Rebecca Gayheart, and their two daughters.
