Tragic young woman died accidentally from paracetamol toxicity after taking the drug for toothache following a deliberate overdose after relationship breakup

A coroner has ruled that 23-year-old Jessica Reynolds died accidentally from paracetamol toxicity, not by intention.

Ms Reynolds had taken a deliberate overdose in June last year following the breakdown of a relationship. She did not receive medical treatment at the time and struggled to access mental health support.

Weeks later, she began taking large amounts of paracetamol for severe toothache. Over time, the drug built up in her system. She became increasingly unwell, suffering confusion, vomiting and breathlessness. When she was admitted to hospital, doctors discovered catastrophic liver failure caused by paracetamol poisoning.

She was transferred to a specialist unit, placed on intensive care and put on the urgent liver transplant list. Despite treatment, including dialysis, her organs failed and she died in July.

At the inquest, the coroner concluded that she did not intend to end her life. Her death was the result of toxic accumulation of the medication in her body.

Her family described her as bright, caring and deeply loved. The case highlights the serious risks of exceeding recommended doses of common painkillers, especially after a previous overdose, and the importance of early medical and mental health support.
