Man diagnosed with throat cancer ‘surprised’ to learn it was caused by oral sex

A British father of two was diagnosed with throat cancer after noticing a firm lump on his neck that did not go away.

Frank Lane sought medical advice when the swelling lasted more than two weeks. Tests confirmed throat cancer linked to HPV, a common virus that can be passed through oral sex and may remain dormant for years.

Frank, who had quit smoking a decade earlier, said he was shocked by the diagnosis. He underwent chemotherapy and six weeks of radiotherapy. The treatment was tough, but it was successful, and he is now cancer-free and monitored regularly.

He is urging others to take persistent symptoms seriously and get checked early. Experts say HPV is common, but vaccination and early detection can significantly reduce the risk of serious illness.
