At Emma and Dylan’s wedding reception, the hotel manager interrupted their first dance to inform Emma that her grandmother, Martha, was outside wanting to see her. Despite Emma’s reluctance, she decided to face her grandmother. “You weren’t invited for a reason,” Emma reminded Martha. Martha, with tears in her eyes, apologized and handed Emma a jewelry box as a wedding gift.

Years ago, Emma’s father was sentenced to jail because Martha refused to sell her bakery to pay his compensation. Emma’s resentment grew when her father died in prison. “If it weren’t for your greed, my father would be here today!” Emma shouted at Martha during the wedding.

After angrily throwing the jewelry box, it broke open, revealing an emerald ring and a note. Martha’s letter explained that Emma’s father wasn’t a good man and that she had kept the bakery for Emma’s sake. “I know you hate me…but your father was not a nice man,” Martha wrote, hoping Emma would understand one day.

The next day, Emma rushed to Martha’s house, only to find out it had been sold and that Martha had been diagnosed with stage-four skin cancer. Emma learned from a neighbor that Martha sold the house to provide for Emma. Devastated, Emma went to the motel where Martha stayed, only to find out she had passed away the night before. Emma’s grief overwhelmed her as she finally understood her grandmother’s actions.
