Author David Quammen, who warned years ago that a coronavirus pandemic was likely, now says bird flu (H5N1) could be the next major global threat.
The virus is spreading widely among wild birds, poultry, and even dairy cows. While it does not easily spread between people, Quammen warns that every new animal infection gives the virus a chance to mutate.
He points to large-scale industrial farming as a key risk. Crowded conditions allow viruses to evolve and increase the chances of spreading to farmworkers.
For now, the risk to the general public remains low. However, experts say close monitoring, stronger biosecurity, and better preparedness are essential to prevent another global crisis.
