Study Suggests COVID-19 Immune Response May Help Fight Cancer

Scientists at Northwestern Medicine have found that the virus causing COVID‑19 may trigger immune cells that can also attack cancer.

Research published in the Journal of Clinical Investigation shows the virus can activate special white blood cells that enter tumors and signal other immune cells to destroy cancer cells.

Early experiments showed responses in cancers such as melanoma, lung, breast, and colon cancer.

Researchers stress the discovery is still in early stages, but future clinical trials could explore new treatments based on this immune response.
