We left ‘horrible’ Australia and moved back to Scotland with our kids after just 18 months. This is why we’ve come back – and think everyone should do the same

A Scottish couple, Ruthie Ellis and John Ellis, moved between Scotland and Australia while searching for a better life.

They first moved to Sydney in 2020 but returned to Scotland after family challenges, including their daughter’s epilepsy diagnosis.

In 2023, they moved again and settled on the Gold Coast for a more outdoor lifestyle.

Despite spending about $50,000 on the moves, Ruthie says the experience was worth it.
