Derek was filled with worry as he walked to the police station. It had been a week since his daughter, Amber, had run away. Despite a police search, she seemed to have vanished.
At the station, the officer reassured Derek, “We will inform you immediately when we find something.” However, Derek remained anxious, knowing something was wrong. Amber was all he had since raising her alone after his ex-wife left when Amber was two.
Walking home, Derek saw a homeless woman with Amber’s backpack. “Excuse me, where did you get this backpack?” he asked. She replied, “Found it at the bus station; some teenage girl left it behind.” Inside the backpack, Derek found a paper with an address and “Hostess Family” written on it, giving him hope.
Derek drove to the address and called Amber’s friend, Claire. She admitted, “Amber said she would go to the concert anyway. She asked me to swear I wouldn’t tell anyone.” At the address, a woman informed Derek, “But she never arrived.” Feeling despair, Derek drove around and unexpectedly saw his ex-wife, Miranda. When confronted, she confessed, “She’s here… I needed her just for this. As soon as mom signs the will, Amber can go back home.”
Amber overheard and ran away. Derek found her crying and comforted her. “I should have understood everything when she said I needed to find a ‘Hostess Family’ to live with,” Amber said. Derek replied, “It’s okay. You just wanted to meet your mom.” Amber realized her mistake, “I’m sorry, Dad. I didn’t mean to worry you.” Derek reassured her, “It’s not hard when you have the best daughter in the world,” as they hugged and walked to the car together.
