My In-Laws Treat Me like a Maid & Made Me Cook for Them While I Was Sick — I Took It up with My Husband

A woman on Reddit shared her struggles living with her in-laws after moving in to help care for her ill father-in-law. Initially, she and her husband agreed to support his parents, but the arrangement turned sour. She found herself handling all household chores, including cooking, cleaning, and managing finances.

Despite her efforts, her in-laws and husband didn’t assist. She expressed frustration: “I felt the [worst] I’ve ever felt and wanted nothing more than to sleep however once it got around to dinner time, I was woken by my MIL to ask when I was getting up to make dinner.” Her husband promised to help but failed to follow through, leading her to feel like a live-in maid.

Things escalated when she fell ill, and her mother-in-law demanded she cook and clean. Horrified, she confronted her husband, who dismissed her concerns. Seeking advice on Reddit, users urged her to leave. She eventually transferred her wages to a private account and discovered she was pregnant. This intensified the conflict, as her in-laws planned to take over raising the child without her consent.

Her breaking point came when her mother-in-law criticized her baby shopping choices. After three unsuccessful talks with her husband, she moved out and began divorce proceedings. Relocating closer to her family, she prepared to raise her child surrounded by supportive relatives. Reddit users applauded her decision to escape the toxic environment.
