‘Fastest Man in the World’ Noah Lyles, 27, Taken off Olympic Track in Wheelchair: What Happened?

Noah Lyles, 27, dubbed the “Fastest man in the world,” left the 2024 Paris Olympics track in a wheelchair after winning bronze in the men’s 200-meter final on August 8. Days earlier, Lyles was diagnosed with COVID-19 but chose to compete despite his condition.

After the race, Lyles struggled to walk, eventually collapsing on the track. NBC’s Lewis Johnson reported Lyles’ mother was “distraught trying to find him” as he received medical attention. Lyles later shared that he felt “horrible” on August 6 and tested positive for the virus. Despite the illness, he said, “I’ve been in worse situations, I’ve run with worse conditions.”

Lyles, who also suffers from asthma, decided to end his 2024 Olympic journey after the 200-meter race. He reflected on Instagram, “It wasn’t the Olympics I’d dreamed of, but it has left me with so much joy in my heart.” Lyles had previously secured gold in the 100-meter dash on August 4 but announced he wouldn’t compete further.
