Lice Spread Quickly
Head lice are a persistent issue, especially when children return to school after holidays. “Kids are at greatest risk during the summer months,” according to the Care Guidebook. Lice spread through direct hair contact, not by jumping or flying. While some fear transmission via brushes and hats, Care Guide states the risk is low since fallen lice weaken quickly.
Detecting Lice and Their Eggs
Symptoms, such as itching, usually appear 4-6 weeks after infection. Lice are 1-3 millimeters long, translucent, and vary in color. Using a lice comb is the best way to detect them. Eggs, often easier to spot, are found near the scalp. Care Guide advises, “Do not begin treatment if you find empty eggs, only if there is a living lice found in your hair.”

Effective Treatment
Lice shampoos can help but may not eliminate lice completely. Healthy Life Center suggests an alternative, chemical-free method:
- Wet hair with mouthwash, cover with a shower cap for an hour.
- Rinse and soak in white vinegar for another hour.
- Wash hair with regular shampoo and use a lice comb.
- Lightly spray mouthwash on hair to deter future infestations.
