Authorities have provided an update on Gene Hackman and Betsy Arakawa’s surviving dogs. The couple, found dead in their New Mexico home on February 26, had three dogs—one of which was discovered lifeless near Betsy’s body. The two surviving dogs were found inside and outside the property.

The Santa Fe County Animal Control is working with Hackman’s family to “ensure the safety of the two dogs.” Investigators found no signs of forced entry or carbon monoxide poisoning in the home. Sheriff Adan Mendoza stated the couple had been deceased for “quite a while.”

Betsy was found in the bathroom with an open prescription bottle and pills scattered on the counter. Deputies suspect “the heater could have fallen in the event the female abruptly fell.” Gene’s body was found in the mudroom, with deputies believing he may have suffered a sudden fall.

Gene’s daughter, Leslie, said her father “was in a very good physical condition” and credited Betsy for “keeping him alive.” Authorities continue to investigate, calling the circumstances “suspicious enough in nature to require a thorough search.”
