Track and field athlete, 19, suddenly dies after taking nap following competition

A Triumphant Day Turns Tragic
Natalie Black, a 19-year-old track and field athlete at Belhaven University, passed away in her sleep on March 1 after celebrating a personal best in the triple jump. “She about knocked me over celebrating,” recalled her coach, Tytavia Hardy.

A Sudden Loss
After her victory, Natalie went home to Terry, Mississippi, took a nap, and never woke up. Her mother, Formeka Black, shared: “She was so happy! That smile, man!… She simply laid on the couch for a little nap and never woke up.”

Remembering Natalie
At a candlelit vigil, family, friends, and teammates honored her memory. “When she comes in the room, the energy shifts,” said her mother. “She was so sweet with the biggest smile,” added teammate Tierra Kelly. Coach Christi Delaughter said, “Couldn’t have asked for a better athlete or person.”

Natalie’s impact on her community remains strong, as those who knew her cherish her kindness, positivity, and love for the sport.
