Sister Geneviève Jeanningros, the nun seen breaking protocol to mourn Pope Francis at his coffin, has spoken about their deep friendship. The two first met in 2005 when Francis, then Archbishop of Buenos Aires, approved the reburial of her aunt, Sister Leonie Duquet.
On April 23 at St. Peter’s Basilica, Geneviève approached the late pontiff’s casket, wiping away tears in a moment that quickly went viral. Although only male clergy were allowed inside, no one stopped her. “I cried for them too,” she said, explaining many had asked her to carry their prayers.

Describing Francis as “a Father, a friend, and a brother,” Geneviève revealed they met often, sometimes with members of the LGBTQ+ community. She added, “I can’t talk to anyone… I liked him a lot, that’s it.”
More than 250,000 mourners visited the Pope before his funeral, while world leaders, including Donald Trump and Prince William, gathered at St. Peter’s Square to say goodbye.
