Donald Trump has sparked controversy by urging Canada to become America’s “cherished 51st state” as Canadians head to the polls. Posting on Truth Social, Trump praised the idea, saying it would create “the most incredible country visually” and even promised, “Keep ‘O Canada,’ the national anthem. I love it.”

The election sees Liberal Mark Carney, newly sworn in after Justin Trudeau, battling Conservative Pierre Poilievre in a race too close to call. Just weeks ago, Poilievre led by 25 points, but Carney has quickly narrowed the gap.

Trump promised Canadians massive economic benefits like “quadrupled businesses” and “zero tariffs” if they joined the U.S., declaring, “Free access with NO BORDER. ALL POSITIVES WITH NO NEGATIVES. IT WAS MEANT TO BE!”

In response, Poilievre firmly rejected Trump’s comments: “Canada will always be proud, sovereign, and independent. We will NEVER be the 51st state.”
